Chaz Bono On Cher’s Reactions To Her Son

In Chaz Bono‘s new book, Transition: The Story of How I Became a Man, Chaz talks about the different approaches taken by dad Sonny Bono and mama Cher.

Writes Chaz:

“With my dad, I was comfortable and happy.

“He treated me like the boy I felt myself to be.”

But Cher would say insensitive things like, “You walk like a truck driver. You dress like a slob.”

]

Says Chaz, “I heard again and again how she thought I was too masculine.”

Years later, when Chaz told her he was transitioning, the stuff really hit.

Cher reacted positively at first, but once she was faced with the reality, she was devastated.

She even said she couldn’t talk to Chaz or see him for the time being! She had to break off communication!

Writes Chaz, “I decided to take this request as a need to grieve the loss of her daughter.”

Yikes.

I still adore Cher and always will, but I have to admit I thought that someone who was such a groundbreaker herself would be a little cooler in these left-of-center situations.

Chaz Bono Proves Something About Transsexuals

Chaz Bono has been promoting his documentary Becoming Chaz, which is apparently an educational effort about the life-changing transition Chaz made in leaving Chastity behind.

But judging from the above-linked photos, what I’m basically learning is that not only do lesbians wear plaid shirts, but straight men do too!

(So kidding. Hey, maybe this movie will make up for mama’s Golden Razzie nod.)

Christina Aguilera Will End Up With Chaz Bono

I make that bold assertion in this brand-new interview with me on GPhilly.

After all, they have that Cher connection. End of story.

But that’s not really what the interview (done by writer Natalie Hope McDonald) is about anyway.

Mainly, it focuses on my gig judging the Mr. Gay USA pageant in Philadelphia this weekend — what the title means; what I’ll look for in a contestant; and what it’s going to be like to be doing this alongside the A-List: New York boys.

Yes, the guys and I will be bonding ever so tightly as we get together to judge other people.

Cher vs. Annette Bening: Which Mother of a FTM Is Doing Better?

Cher once had problems coming to terms with her daughter Chastity’s lesbianism, and now she admits she still wrestles with being totally comfortable regarding Chastity’s transitioning to Chaz Bono.

The Oscar-winning singer/actress still gets the pronouns wrong and sometimes forgets to say “he,” but something about the way she’s so honest about this is quite disarming and you end up understanding her fallibility and sort of liking her, as always.

]

Meanwhile, Annette Bening and Warren Beatty‘s teen daughter Kathlyn has reportedly been living as a transgender male named Stephen for some time, and Bening and Beatty are as mum on the subject as they would be about Love Affair.

Does this reek of an unsavory embarrassment over it all? Shouldn’t Bening be more public about it, like Cher is, and thereby diffuse any hesitancy about this story?

Probably — though, to be fair, Chaz has been in the public eye since being featured on The Sonny and Cher Show decades ago and later continued to seek the spotlight with organizational work, books, and TV appearances.

Young Stephen really hasn’t.

So maybe Bening’s right to act like it’s nobody’s business but theirs? Or is she just making things seem icky with her silence?

Someone help me decide.
