Bring your walking shoes to Japan Society, where Alec Duffy, founder of the Obie Award–winning company Hoi Polloi, is staging an ambitious production of Yukio Shiba’s Our Planet, in which an actor leads the audience (about 30 people per show)
all over the landmark building, from offices to galleries to stairwells to backstage areas. In 2010, Shiba, who was 27 when he wrote the play, won Japan’s prestigious Kishida Drama Award for his work, which is having its world premiere at Japan Society.
Inspired by Thornton Wilder’s Our Town and starring Jenny Seastone Stern and
Julian Rozzell Jr., it follows the story of an ordinary family and their tiny place in the larger picture of the universe. A truly unique experience not to be passed up.
In previews, opens tonight, through December 8, Japan Society, 333 East 47th Street,
japansociety.org, $20–$28
