HORROR SHOW

by

On the heels of his celebrated Moby-Dick in Pictures, self-taught artist Matt Kish has now illuminated Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness (Tin House). Each illustration is inspired by the text on the opposite page, escalating in tension as ivory transporter Charles Marlow seeks the vanished, and ultimately mad, Mr. Kurtz. Kish’s Europeans are pale, geometric phantoms; his native Africans are dark, and seem marked for death. Nature displays more vibrant colors: leaves in lacerating greens, the river in sinuous coils of purple and blue. PowerHouse Arena hosts the book launch; as Marlow discovered, some things must be seen in person.
