With a 2010 Thanksgiving concert featuring Nicki Minaj, Lloyd Banks, and countless special guests, Hammerstein Ballroom and Hot 97 set a new standard for rap concerts that have barely anything to do with the holiday on which they are held. For Halloween, however, the venue returns with this “Monsters of Rap” tribute to Jam Master Jay, an event that honors the legacy of the Run-D.M.C. DJ with performances from — of all people — Juelz Santana, Jadakiss, and French Montana. Montana, at least, is a good fit for the occasion: Just as you can dress up in thrift-shop garb and a scary mask, the Bronx rapper likes to dress up old beats, rhymes, and hooks, building onto bits of Uncle Luke, LL Cool J, and even Chaka Demus and Pliers until they’re fit for present-day consumption.
