DREAM ON

by

William Gibson’s observation that “the future is already here, it’s just not very evenly distributed” was anticipated decades earlier by R. Buckminster “Bucky” Fuller, whose pragmatic idealism and contemporary relevance is celebrated in filmmaker Sam Green’s The Love Song of R. Buckminster Fuller—a slide-illustrated lecture-performance with live score performed by Yo La Tengo. Green, whose most recent documentary is The Weather Underground, enjoyed complete access to the Stanford Library’s Fuller archive, and has been shaping each performance to local audiences. In that regard, not only did Fuller introduce the geodesic dome to the masses at the 1964 World’s Fair in Flushing, Queens, he developed plans for a dome large enough to cover all of Manhattan, thus reducing the need for heating, cooling, and snowplowing by about 99 percent.
