The Obie-winning Metropolitan Playhouse is well-known for bringing back great American plays you never knew existed. For instance, have you ever heard of Owen Davis’s The Detour? As far as the people at Metropolitan Playhouse know, this will be the first New York production since its 1921 debut at the Astor Theatre. Set on a farm in Long Island, the drama follows a mother with big dreams for her artist daughter and a would-be fiancé who wants to leave the farm behind for the booming automobile industry. For Davis, the play marked his turning away from popular potboilers and sex comedies to more serious work; he went on to win a Pulitzer two years later in 1923 for Icebound. Laura Livingston (The Jazz Singer) directs.
