DIVINE SPIRIT

“There must be happy endings. Must, must, must!” So concludes Bertolt Brecht’s 1943 Good Person of Szechwan, and while we can’t yet say how the revival of this epic at La MaMa will close, it’s off to a good beginning. To start, director Lear deBessonet has assembled a downtown cast as eccentric as it is luminous. Taylor Mac plays Shen Tei, a gold-hearted whore (and no stranger to the occasional drag performance) who wins the favor of the gods and struggles to lead a virtuous life. Annie Golden, Mia Katigbak, and Lisa Kron also appear. The Lisps provide original music, and Clint Ramos oversees the costumes. Sounds good to us
