There’s freak-show poetry to this early adaptation of H.G. Well’s mad scientist tale, “Island of Doctor Moreau.” Charles Laughton stars as the epicene administrator of the House of Pain with a hirsute Bela Lugosi as the most poignant of his monsters, howling at the moon, “Are we not men?”
