VOICE CHOICES ARCHIVES

Dave Douglas & Brass Ecstasy

by

Maybe it’s the oomph of the tuba. Maybe it’s the growl of the trombone. Something gives the trumpeter’s four-horn and drummer squad an exclamatory feel, even when they are operating in a whisper. When they choose to let loose, it’s groove city, and when they turn the polyphony inside out, formulas are scrambled. Last summer at Newport, they made hay with everything from a Lester Bowie homage to a Hank Williams sob story. New tunes have been added for this Vanguard hit, bur cross your fingers that the Rufus Wainwright nod make the cut.
